Copilot Chat vs ChatGPT Free: what to compare for work
Jan 09, 2026
COPILOT AND CHATGPT • COMPARISON
Our January 2026 test showed why first impressions can differ from useful results. Treat it as an example of how to compare tools, rather than a permanent ranking of products.
Post 2 of the series: Starting with Copilot Chat. Based on Koshima’s product testing in January 2026, with a reminder to check current plans and limits.
A first impression is not a complete comparison
When someone tries an AI tool, they often judge the first answer: did it sound helpful, explain enough and feel easy to use? That is understandable. It is also only part of the decision.
In our January 2026 testing, ChatGPT often produced fuller answers while Copilot Chat was more concise. That was an observation from those tests, not a fixed rule. Both tools change, and the response depends on the model, instructions and information supplied.
Compare the result with what the task needs
A long answer may be useful when exploring a subject. For another task, it may create more editing. A short answer may be immediately useful, or it may leave out something important.
The right question is whether the work meets the standard you set. Does it contain the required information? Is it accurate? Is the level of detail suitable for the reader? How much correction is needed before it can be used?
PAUSE AND CHECK
Longer is not automatically better.
Agree what a good result must contain before comparing tools. Then judge the work against those requirements rather than the length or confidence of the answer.
Our questionnaire example
In one of our tests, we asked both tools to draft a post-training questionnaire. ChatGPT returned 23 questions and Copilot Chat returned eight. The shorter questionnaire was closer to what we needed for that particular situation.
That does not prove Copilot always produces a better questionnaire. A more precise instruction to either tool could change the result. The useful lesson is to state the purpose, the number of questions, the time available to answer and what the feedback needs to tell you.
Then review whether the questions actually measure what matters. Remove repeated questions and make sure the answers will help you decide what to improve.
Test the work you expect people to complete
A business comparison should include the task, source documents, instructions and checks that people would use at work. Try several examples rather than relying on a single response.
- Use a realistic amount of source information.
- Work through the required steps, including corrections.
- Check whether the final result is complete and accurate.
- Record time spent preparing, checking and revising.
- Repeat the task with different information.
Check current access and limits
Features and usage limits change. OpenAI’s current Free Tier guidance describes separate limits for tools such as uploads and data analysis. Copilot access also depends on the account, licence and organisation’s settings.
Do not assume either product will complete every task without an interruption. Test the account and capabilities your team would actually receive. A personal free account is also a different choice from a managed business workspace with company controls.
For current details, see OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ and Microsoft’s Copilot access guidance.
PAUSE AND CHECK
Choose for the work, not the first answer.
Compare quality, completion, checking effort and the information each account can use. Your organisation’s rules and the needs of the people doing the work belong in that decision.
Chat is only one part of the experience
When work happens in Outlook, Word, Excel or PowerPoint, consider what the available Copilot experience can do alongside it. When comparing ChatGPT, consider the relevant plan and features rather than assuming all accounts are the same.
The next article in this series looks at Copilot inside Microsoft 365 apps. The important question throughout is the same: which approach helps your team complete the required work to a good standard?
